Blind people usually feel uncomfortable walking around public places because all the clutter with street vendors, animals, and people.

SmartCanes purpose is to help guide the visually impaired through busy streets, making them feel more comfortable.

White canes show people that the person using it is visually impaired, but it is poor at detecting obstacles.

The SmartCane team took on roles of these obstacles such as animals like bats. They used bats because they emit sonar calls into their surroundings and the echoes bounce back from objects around them

The SmartCane sends out ultrasound waves via a device attached to the regular white cane.

The cane sends vibrations to the user informing them obstacles nearby.

The cane has a ultrasound that scans a 45 degree span above the knee, providing information that a regular white cane can’t provide.

As the user moves the cane from left to right, vibrations in the cane detect and tell the user which way the person should walk toward.

There are other devices like the SmartCane, such as the Ultracane, but retails at more than $1,000 in some places.

The SmartCane retails at 3,000 Indian rupees, which is $50.

The SmartCane team needs at least 50 partners, which could be a government institution to bring the visually impaired independence, not only in India, but it is the goal to benefit all the blind worldwide as well.
